Travel & Useful Information

The meeting will be in person and at this time there is no intention for it to be hybrid.  We think that this will provide the best environment for the scientific interaction that may of us have missed over the past 2 years.  The Covid situation in the UK appears to be on the decline and there are currently no testing or quarantine requirements for entry to the UK.

 

Covid Restrictions for Travel to the UK

As of 18 March 2022, the UK Government has removed all restrictions on travel to England. 

 

When you travel to England from abroad you:

  • do not need to take any COVID-19 tests before you travel or after you arrive,
  • do not need to fill in a UK passenger locator form,
  • do not need to quarantine when you arrive.

 

This applies whether you are vaccinated or not.

It includes people who are transiting through England.

You should follow any rules that your travel provider tells you to follow.

Other countries may have rules about what you need to do to leave the country to travel to England. You should check travel advice for the country you are travelling from.

Red Countries

There are currently no red list restrictions in place for travel to England.

 

Once you are in England there are no domestic restrictions with respect to Covid although certain venues may have their own rules to reduce the risk of catch or spreading Covid, most common is guidance to wear a face mask. The UK government guidance can be found here:

When returning home you will need to satisfy any conditions of the country you are travelling to.

Directions to Oxford

The University maintains a guide on How to get to Oxford. The following information may also be useful in planning your trip:

By train

Oxford's main railway station (OXF) is located on the western edge of the city centre, about 20 minutes’ walk from St Catherine’s College or a five minute taxi ride. There are direct trains from both London Paddington and London Marylebone, with journeys taking around 60 minutes. Information on rail journeys and fares to/from Oxford are available from National Rail website - http://www.nationalrail.co.uk.

By bus

The main bus station in Oxford is located at Gloucester Green in the City Centre, approximately 15-20 minutes’ walk from St Catherine’s College. 

National Express runs a variety of services to Oxford from locations throughout the UK.

The Oxford Tube bus service runs from Central London (Victoria, Marble Arch, Notting Hill Gate and Shepherd’s Bush) to Oxford every 10-15 minutes including throughout the night.

The Airline (by Oxford Bus Company) offers regular coach services between Oxford and Heathrow and Gatwick airports.  You can book in advance but it is also fine to pay on board. 

Megabus offer services to Oxford from Birmingham, Birmingham International Airport, Bournemouth, Cambridge, Coventry, Leeds, London, Loughborough, Manchester, Middlesbrough, Newcastle, Poole, Portsmouth, Sheffield, Silverstone, Southampton, Southampton airport and Sunderland.

By Air

There are four airports with regular bus service to Oxford with Heathrow being by far the closest.  Bus services run regularly from the following airports:

There are also direct trains from Birmingham (1 hours) and trains needing one change from Heathrow (90 minutes) and Gatwick (2 hours).

By car

Parking in Oxford is very limited and expensive.

There are park-and-rides available on the outskirts of Oxford, in all directions. They are all clearly sign-posted, are linked to the centre of the city by regular bus services, and are open 24 hours a day (bus services run until about 11pm). From the Thornhill and Redbridge locations you can catch buses which stop on the High Street from which there is a less than 10 minute walk to St Catherines.

St Catherine’s is on the edge of the City Centre and we recommend that visitors arriving at the bus or train station take a taxi to the College, especially if they are bringing luggage. Walking from the City Centre to St Catherine’s will take between 15 and 20 minutes or from the train station around 25-30 minutes.
